The red warning light on the dishwasher is on!

The warning light merely tells the user to top up the rinse aid or special salt to ensure these elements are added to the cycle.
The red warning light can be ignored when using multi-benefit tabs or Quantum because the rinse and salt function (substitute) is already integrated in these products. Special salt only needs to be added if the water hardness is above 26°e.

General poor cleaning

Even small traces of fragrance can produce an unusual aroma.

Possible cause:
  • Wood or plastic surfaces are porous and are subject to ageing processes. Therefore, in some cases they can have a tendency to adsorb fragrances. These fragrances are not dangerous in food and are completely harmless to health.
Troubleshooting:
  • Items made from wood are not or partly suitable for cleaning in the dishwasher. By cleaning the affected dishes again without a freshener the fragrance will be washed out.

The dishes are still not dry after cleaning.

Possible causes:
  • The dishes weren't loaded properly: All dishes can be placed anywhere in the basket as long as they are stable and all surfaces can come into contact with the rinse or drying aid. Dishes and cutlery should not be placed inside each other or come into contact with each other. Vessels (e.g. cups, glasses, or pots) have to be placed upside down. Items with a deep base should be placed at an incline to allow the rinse aid solution to drain (avoiding puddles). Please ensure that the moving parts of the dishwasher are not blocked (dosing chamber, spray arms)!
  • No rinse or drying aid was used: Classic cleaners (e.g. Finish gel, powder, classic tabs) have to be used in a system with special salt and rinse or drying aid. Please ensure that there is enough rinse or drying aid in the dosing chamber of the dishwasher. Rinse or drying aids lower the surface tension of water and allow consistent drainage as a thin film. This leads to a fast and optimal drying result.
  • Broken dishwasher heating element: Surfactants which are used in rinse or drying aids have a foam inhibiting property at temperatures of >40°C. At the same time, the drying result is influenced by the heat retention properties of the different dishes. Therefore, a defective heating element has to be exchanged!
Troubleshooting:
  • Use rinse or drying aid. A special drying aid produces much better drying results for problematical dishes (e.g. plastic dishes) when used properly (dosage, temperature).

There are undissolved tab residues inside the dishwasher!

Possible cause:
  • Blocked dosing chamber (flap cannot open): Complete dissolution of the tabs can be impaired if the automatic flap for the dosing chamber doesn't open completely/ at all during the cleaning programme and the tab isn't released as a result. If the chamber is blocked by bulky dishes, the unregulated amounts of splash water that do reach the dosing chamber may, in some circumstances, be insufficient to dissolve the tab completely. Thus the dosing chamber will only open completely at the end of a cleaning cycle when the door is opened causing undissolved tab residues to fall out of the dosing chamber into the dishwasher.
Troubleshooting:
  • Load dishes in such a way that they don't block the flap of the dosing chamber.

There are undissolved residues of detergent (powder, tab) in the dosing chamber!

Possible cause:
  • Damp dosing chamber: Before the cleaning detergent is added the dosing chamber has to be dry to prevent it from sticking, forming lumps or absorbing water. In some cases this can hinder the dissolution of the cleaner.
  • Blocked dosing chamber: If the dishwasher is used daily it can sometimes happen that bulky dishes (incorrectly loaded dishwasher) prevent the flap from opening during the cleaning cycle. This slows the release of the detergent (especially tabs) and can even lead to residues being left in the dosing chamber.

The complete discharge of the contents of the dosing chamber is guaranteed for all cleaning formats, if the automatic flap can open completely during the cleaning cycle.

Troubleshooting:
  • Put the detergent into the dosing chamber just before starting the programme and make sure that no bulky dishes will prevent the flap from opening completely.

How can lime scale be removed from glasses?

Possible cause:
  • Lime scale or a grey tinge can occur due to inadequate water softening.
Troubleshooting:
  • Lime scale can be removed by immersion in a solution of citric acid or vinegar. Alternatively, clean the glasses in the dishwasher together with Finish Fusion Dishwasher Cleaner. In order to avoid lime scale building up on glasses the water hardness has to be determined and the water softening unit setting needs to be adjusted. If multi-benefit tabs are being used at a water hardness >26°e, the additional use of rinse aid and special salt is necessary.

Why do glasses appear dull/ cloudy?

Possible cause:
  • Mineral residues (e.g. lime scale): Mineral residues (e.g. lime scale) can occur due to inadequate water softening. Lime scale can be removed by immersion in a solution of citric acid or vinegar. Alternatively, glasses can be cleaned in the dishwasher together with Finish Dishwasher Cleaner.
  • Glass corrosion: If the cloudiness cannot be eliminated the problem is more likely to be damage caused by glass corrosion. Glass corrosion is caused by a change in the structure of the glass surface which can occur when glass dishes are cleaned frequently in the dishwasher and it is mainly dependent on two factors:

    - Cleaning conditions (e.g. temperature, time, water hardness)
    - Composition of the glass (e.g. homogeneity of the glass composition)

    The price of the glasses does not determine whether glass corrosion will occur. Both exclusive premium quality and inexpensive glasses can become irreversibly dull/cloudy.
Troubleshooting:
  • In order to avoid lime scale on glasses the water hardness has to be determined and the water softening unit setting needs to be adjusted.
  • If multi-benefit tabs are being used at water hardness >26°e, the additional use of rinse aid and special salt is necessary.
  • By using products which already include glass protecting agents (e.g. Finish All-in-1) glass corrosion can be reduced significantly.

After cleaning there are still residues of tea and coffee on the cups.

There are a number of causes for such results.

Possible cause:
  • Too little detergent used: If too little detergent is used it doesn’t only lead to inappropriate bleaching and cleaning results but in some rare cases it can also cause malfunctions. Therefore, it is important to use the dishwasher according to the dosage instructions. Finish classic cleaners (gel, powder, tabs) need special salt and rinse aid above 11°e.
  • No special salt was used (for classic products or very hard water): Inappropriate water conditions (hard water) reduce the effectiveness of bleaching agents. Therefore soft water conditions are more efficient for removing tea and coffee stains. Dishwashers have a softening unit which requires special salt in order to work properly. Finish multi-benefit systems (All-in-1, Max-in-1, Quantum) already contain special salt (substitute) and thus no special salt is necessary up to a water hardness of 26°e.
  • Dishes incorrectly loaded/ dishwasher overloaded: All dishes have to be loaded so that they are stable and which allows all surfaces can come into contact with the rinse or drying aid. Dishes and cutlery should not be covered. Do not block any of the working parts of the dishwasher (dosing chamber, spray arms)!
  • Detergent not/ incompletely dissolved: Dishes might be blocking the dosing chamber and preventing it from opening. Another reason could be that a tab has not dissolved completely when using a short time programme (e.g. glass cleaning programme). Tabs need enough time to ensure a controlled release of the active agents. If short-time programmes are used frequently; gel or powder in combination with rinse aid and special salt should be used instead.
  • Spray arms are blocked and can’t move: Remove large items of food inside the nozzles and clean the spray arms with water (counter flow principle). To prevent malfunctions we recommend using the Finish Fusion Dishwasher Cleaner to remove lime scale and dirt.
  • Programme too short/ temperature too low: Short time programmes minimise both time and temperature (e.g. glass cleaning programme - 35°C). Modern dishwasher detergents often contain a bleaching system based on oxygen, e.g. percarbonate/ TAED. The system is most effective at temperatures above 50°C, which leads to reduced bleaching compared to when short-time programmes are used.

Discolouration on plastics!

Possible cause:
  • The surfaces of plastic items may become more porous over the course of time and subsequently absorb dyes from food residues (e.g. tomatoes, mustard, spinach, curry).
Troubleshooting:
  • In many cases cleaning the affected dishes again without a freshener will wash the discolouration out.

Inadequate cleaning result!

Possible cause:
  • Too little detergent used: Especially in hard water areas the use of too little detergent, in combination with unfavourable cleaning conditions (e.g. heavily stained dishes), leads to inadequate cleaning results if the dishwater water hasn’t been softened. Frequent use of too little detergent leads to the build up of deposits inside the dishwasher which, in extreme cases, can lead to malfunctions. If powder or gel is used the dosage needs to be increased according to the instructions.
  • No special salt was used: Hard water and the resulting lime scale deposits can significantly reduce the efficiency and cleaning result. Therefore, dishwashers have a softening unit which needs to be filled with special salt regularly. If multi-benefit tabs with a salt function are used (up to 26°e) it is not necessary to use special salt.
  • Dishes not loaded properly/ machine overloaded: All dishes can be loaded anywhere in the basket as long as they are stable and all surfaces can come into contact with cleaning or rinse aid solution. Dishes and cutlery should not be placed inside each other or come into contact with each other. Vessels (e.g. cups, glasses, or pots) have to be placed upside down. Items with a deep base should be placed at an incline to allow the rinse aid solution to drain (avoiding puddles). Please ensure that the moving parts of the dishwasher are not blocked (dosing chamber, spray arms)!
  • Detergent didn’t dissolve completely/ at all: The complete dissolution of the tabs can be impaired if the automatic flap for the dosing chamber doesn’t open completely/ at all during the cleaning programme and the tab isn’t released as a result. If the chamber is blocked by bulky dishes, the unregulated amounts of splash water that do reach the dosing chamber may, in some circumstances, be insufficient to dissolve the tab completely. Before the cleaning detergent is added the dosing chamber has to be dry to prevent it from sticking, forming lumps or absorbing water. In some cases this can hinder the dissolution of the cleaner.
  • High amount of food residues in filters/ sieves: High amounts of food residues in filters and sieves can cause a reduction in the effectiveness of the agent and even lead to malfunctions. Therefore, sieves and filters should be taken out and cleaned if they are affected by significant food residues.
  • Spray arms are blocked or can’t move: Remove large food residues inside the nozzles and clean spray arms with water (counter flow principle). To prevent malfunctions we recommend using Finish Dishwasher Cleaner for deep cleansing.
  • Cleaning programme is too short: A short time programme is not enough for stubborn, dried on food stains, because the cleaning process always depends on different factors.
Troubleshooting:
  • We recommend using standard programmes like “Eco” (45 – 55°C) for the dirtiest dishes.

Food residues on dishes!

Possible cause:
  • High amount of food residues in filters/ sieves: Filters and sieves need to be cleaned regularly to prevent food residues being washed back into the dishwasher during the rinsing cycle.
  • High staining: Large food residues should be cleaned by hand (paper towel) before loading the dishwasher. In general, dishes shouldn’t be pre-washed to avoid unnecessarily high consumption of drinking water; except for problematical dishes like silver or silver alloy in combination with food containing sulphur (e.g. eggs, mayonnaise), or stainless steel in combination with food residues containing chlorides (e.g. mustard, ketchup).
  • Spray arms are blocked and can’t move: To guarantee trouble-free operation of the dishwasher it is necessary that the spray arms can move freely. If nozzles are blocked (e.g. due to residues from food), their function cannot be guaranteed and this can adversely affect the cleaning and rinsing performance inside the dishwasher.Remove large food stains inside the nozzles and clean spray arms with water (counter flow principle). To prevent malfunctions we recommend using Finish Fusion Machine Cleaner for deep cleansing.
  • Dishes not loaded properly/ machine overloaded: All dishes can be loaded anywhere in the basket as long as they are stable and all surfaces are can come into contact with the rinse or drying aid. Dishes and cutlery should not be placed inside each other or in contact with each other. Vessels (e.g. cups, glasses, or pots) have to be placed upside down. Items with a deep base should be placed at an incline to allow the rinse aid solution to drain (avoiding puddles). Please ensure that the moving parts of the dishwasher are not blocked (dosing chamber, spray arms)!

Grease residues inside the dishwasher and very dirty dishes!

Possible cause:
  • Under normal conditions the inside of the dishwasher is self-cleaning. In some cases, especially when very dirty dishes are washed frequently, coating inside the dishwasher can occur, usually in combination with unfavourable cleaning conditions (e.g. too little detergent, hard water). In extreme situations, this can lead to malfunctions, the blockage of spray arms, and residues in filters and outlets.
Troubleshooting:
  • In order to remove residues of grease we recommend using Finish Dishwasher Cleaner every 1 – 2 months in order to guarantee a trouble-fee operation of the dishwasher.

Can porcelain be cleaned in the dishwasher?

Generally yes. However, porcelain can be decorated with different patterns (see Dishes Presentation IIc). Depending on the manufacturing process, their resistance can be very different. So-called on-glaze patterns, which will fade, are not suitable for dishwashers. They can easily be recognised as their surfaces are raised (you can feel this with your fingers).

Can glass corrosion be removed or reversed?

No, existing glass corrosion is irreversible. The best protection can be achieved by using multi-benefit products (e.g. Finish All-in-1, Quantum) where the glass protection function is included.

Can stainless steel be cleaned in the dishwasher?

High-alloyed steel, as used for the production of dishwasher-proof cutlery or pots, can be cleaned in a dishwasher without any problems. Cutlery which is labelled “rust free” often consists of low-alloyed steel (with a lower, metal protecting chromium, vanadium or molybdenum content). This increases the risk of rust forming.

Traces of rust on “rust free” items and/ or inside the dishwasher!

Possible cause:
  • High concentration of salt/chloride ions (table salt, salt for regeneration)
  • Problematical food residues stay on the item for some time (e.g. ketchup, mustard)
  • Quality of the stainless steel

In some cases rusty discolouration can appear on high-quality cutlery labelled “rust-free”. Rust formation is increased if rust is "transferred". This rust can be formed from low quality metals and is distributed throughout the dishwasher (metallic surfaces) during the cleaning cycle. In the process, an electro-chemical reaction occurs by which rust can be carried around the dishwasher or onto premium dishes via an electrolyte and by conductivity (e.g. contact corrosion). This phenomenon is also called “surface rust”.
If chloride-containing and/ or acidic food residues remain on dishes or cutlery a long time they will destroy the protective layer, reducing the percentage of alloy on the stainless steel surface. This leads to a loss of the stainless steel properties (passivation = metal surface protection layer).

Troubleshooting:
  • When loading the dishwasher check that the dishes and cutlery are “dishwasher proof/ suitable”.

Can aluminium be cleaned in the dishwasher?

Frequent cleaning of items made of aluminium (i.e. alloys) can lead to discolouration of the surface. If the customer accepts this harmless discolouration (either intensive brightening, e.g. on the bottom of pots or pans; or blackening, e.g. “black finger prints” on a garlic press) these items can be cleaned in a dishwasher. In general, however, we would like to point out that dishes made of aluminium or aluminium alloys are less suitable for cleaning in the dishwasher.

Can silver cutlery be cleaned in the dishwasher?

Yes, generally it’s not a problem to clean silverware in the dishwasher, except in combination with food containing sulphur (e.g. egg, mayonnaise, mustard etc) in order to prevent the formation of silver sulphide during the cleaning programme. In addition, the detergent must contain silver protecting ingredients to inhibit silver tarnishing during the cleaning cycle.
Because Finish detergents have an integrated silver protection agent, silver cutlery can be cleaned in a dishwasher. Direct contact with other metal parts should be avoided.

Can plastic be cleaned in the dishwasher?

Generally, thermoplastics can be cleaned at low temperatures (50 °C) in the dishwasher. When cleaned at higher temperatures deformation can occur (depending on the type of plastic and its shape). Look for the marking, “Dishwasher proof”.

Plastic dishes now smell of perfume!

Can wooden items be cleaned in the dishwasher?

Items made of wood or containing wood (e.g. cutting boards, cutlery with wooden grips) are not suitable for cleaning in dishwashers. The wood can crack and swell. In addition, some wooden items are glued on and the conditions inside the dishwasher can cause the glue to dissolve.

The lower spray arm isn’t moving.

Possible cause:
  • The spray arm is blocked by food residues or small parts
Troubleshooting:
  • Remove large food residues from inside the nozzles and clean the spray arms with water (counter flow principle). To prevent malfunctions we recommend using the Finish Dishwasher Cleaner for deep cleansing.

Heavy foaming inside the dishwasher.

All dishwasher detergents have been developed to be suitable for the conditions occurring in dishwashers and therefore their ingredients do not foam or only foam slightly.

Possible cause:
  • Dishes pre-washed with washing up liquid: In general, dishes shouldn’t be pre-washed with washing up liquid to avoid unnecessarily high consumption of drinking water; except for problematical items such as silver or silver alloys in combination with food containing sulphur (e.g. egg, mayonnaise) or stainless steel in combination with food residues containing chlorides (e.g. mustard, ketchup).
  • Heavy staining by protein-containing food: If there are a lot of protein-containing stains such as eggs, yogurt, curd, milk etc. and cleaning conditions are inappropriate (soft water, low temperature) intensive foaming can occur.
  • Broken dishwasher heating element: Surfactants which are used in rinse and drying aids require temperatures of > 40°C for optimal results. At the same time, drying results depend on the specific heat capacity properties of the dishes.
Troubleshooting:
  • If dishes have been pre-washed with washing up liquid it has to be carefully rinsed off properly before the dishes are loaded into the dishwasher. Otherwise heavy foaming can occur which reduces the mechanical cleaning performance (pump gets compromised by foam).
  • If there are a lot of protein containing stains, we recommend removing food residues by hand (e.g. with a paper towel) before loading the dishwasher. In general dishes should not be rinsed with tap water.
  • Replace defective dishwater heating elements!

To remove foam we recommend adding 1 – 3 table spoons of vegetable oil to the bottom of the dishwasher. If a foam reducing product (defoaming agent) is available, it should be used in preference according to the recommended dosage.

The dosing chamber won’t shut.

Possible cause:
  • The dosing chamber has been over-filled or the mechanism is blocked because of spilled or dried-on detergent.
  • The closing mechanism of the dosing chamber is defective
Troubleshooting:
  • The use of tabs makes over dosing or detergent spillage impossible.

Does lime scale build up if there is no special salt in the water softening unit?

A water softener unit can only bind a limited amount of calcium and magnesium ions. After the salt has been used up no additional calcium/ magnesium ions can be bound and the water will flow through the dishwasher unaltered. No lime scale can then be deposited inside the water softening unit.

There is stain inside the dishwasher (often white coating)!

Possible cause:
  • Deposits of minerals and/ or food residues: Under normal conditions the inside of the dishwasher is self-cleaning. In some cases when very dirty dishes are being washed, coating inside the dishwasher can occur, usually in combination with unfavourable cleaning conditions (e.g. too little detergent, hard water). In extreme cases, this can lead to malfunctions, blockage of spray arms, and residues in filters and outlets.
Troubleshooting:
  • In order to remove residues of minerals (e.g. lime scale) or organic substances (e.g. grease) we recommend using Finish Dishwasher Cleaner every 1 – 2 months in order to guarantee trouble-free operation of the dishwasher.
  • Measure the water hardness and check if the dishwasher softening unit has been set correctly. If you have any doubts about the given water hardness value (e.g. from the water supplier) or there are any fluctuations turn it to the maximum setting.
  • Refill the salt regularly and sufficiently to guarantee constant water conditions.

There’s a yellow-brownish film inside the dishwasher!

Possible cause:
  • High amounts of iron (iron oxide = red-brown) in water can lead to the development of a yellow-brownish film
Troubleshooting:
  • The build up of iron impurities inside the dishwasher can be avoided by attaching a special filter to the water inlet. To remove the red-brownish film we recommend using Finish Fusion Machine Cleaner regularly every 1 – 2 months.

Iridescent film on stainless steel!

Possible cause:
  • The iridescent film (rainbow effect) is caused by very thin layers or coatings formed from food residues from vegetables such as cauliflower or potatoes. They are completely harmless. These coatings refract light differently and produce this effect on stainless steel surfaces (e.g. pots, dishwasher sidewalls).
Troubleshooting:
  • Rainbow effects can be removed by using Finish Dishwasher Cleaner together with any affected stainless steel items.

The dishwasher does not start

Possible cause:
  • The dishwasher door may not be properly shut.
  • The main fuse has tripped.
  • The appliance plug has not been inserted.
  • The tap has not been turned on.
  • The filter on the water supply hose is blocked.
Troubleshooting:
  • The door of the dishwasher is equipped with a safety system. A micro switch in the door locking device controls the programme start of the dishwasher. The door needs to be closed properly in order to run the dishwasher. Also, if the dishwasher door is opened during a cycle, the programme is automatically stopped.
  • If the main fuse has tripped, it needs to be changed. Instructions how to change the main fuse are explained in the instruction manual the appliance. Otherwise, the technical service of the appliance manufacturer should be called.
  • Make sure the plug of the dishwasher is inserted into a power socket.
  • In order to guarantee a constant water inlet into the dishwasher, make sure that the tap is opened when running a dishwasher cycle.
  • Most of the water supply hose contain a filter to avoid that bigger particles from the water supply (e.g. limescale) enter the machine and cause clogging. If the filter on the water supply hose is blocked, it needs to be cleaned. The instruction manual of the dishwasher provides advices how to clean the filter.

The water is not pumped out of the dishwasher

Possible cause:
  • The drain hose is kinked.
  • The filter system may be clogged.
  • The kitchen sink drain may be clogged.
Troubleshooting:
  • If the drain hose is kinked, the water can not run properly into the machine. Therefore, it is important to make sure that a portion of the drain hose is at least 0.5m above the dishwasher’s enclosure floor.
  • In order to avoid a clogging of the filter system, it should be cleaned regularly (e.g. once a week). Bigger food residues that can cause a clogging of the filter system should be removed from the tableware before placing the items into the dishwasher.
  • If the kitchen sink drain is clogged it may be necessary to asked a plumbing service to remove the blockage.

There is a rattling / knocking noise coming out of the dishwasher during a cycle.

Possible cause:
  • Dishes may not be properly arranged in the baskets and touch each other during the cycle.
  • A spray arm is knocking against the dishes (e.g. a long cooking utensil placed in the cutlery basket) inside the appliance.
Troubleshooting:
  • Rattling dishes due to the water pressure may cause damages to the surface, e.g. scratches on glasses. To avoid damages to the dishes, the baskets should be loaded properly. A loading advice for the specific baskets in the different appliances is given by the manufacturer in the manual.
